Belatedly updated World Cup roster

Two roster announcements came out yesterday, one from the USWNT and one from the All-Star… thingy. However, this quick, pre-coffee entry is for the upcoming World Cup because I have been remiss.

A couple weeks ago, Ellis took Sade Ayinde (D, Maryland) off the roster in favor of Mollie Pathmam (D), a U-18 who will begin her college career at Duke this fall. Pathman is the 2009-2010 Gatorade National Girls’ High School Player of the Year. The US Soccer writeup on that is here. It is not very informative.

The US U-20s will head to a final camp in New York on June 3. They head to Europe July 7, one week before their opening game against Ghana (July 14). Although their recent results in friendly matches are discouraging, I wish them the best of luck. I would really like to be proven wrong about this team, but as we learned from the 2006 to 2008 transition, maybe it’s for the best if we don’t demand that this team win gold.

Updated U.S. 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Roster

GOALKEEPERS (3): Adrianna Franch (Oklahoma State; Salina, Kan.), Bryane Heaberlin (Clearwater Chargers; St. Petersburg, Fla.), Bianca Henninger (Santa Clara; Los Gatos, Calif.)

DEFENDERS (5): Crystal Dunn (UNC; Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Kendall Johnson (Portland; Portland, Ore.), Mollie Pathman (Triangle FC; Durham, N.C.), Toni Pressley (Florida State; Melbourne, Fla.), Rachel Quon (Stanford; Lake Forrest, Ill.)

MIDFIELDERS (8): Amber Brooks (UNC; New Hope, Pa.), Zakiya Bywaters (UCLA; Las Vegas, Nev.), Kristie Mewis (Boston College; Hanson, Mass.), Samantha Mewis (Scorpions SC; Hanson, Mass.), Christine Nairn (Penn State; Bowie, Md.), Teresa Noyola (Stanford; Palo Alto, Calif.), Jenna Richmond (UCLA; Centreville, Va.), Casey Short (Florida State; Naperville, Ill.)

FORWARDS (5): Vicki DiMartino (Boston College; Massapequa, N.Y.), Maya Hayes (Penn State; West Orange, N.J.), Sydney Leroux (UCLA; Phoenix, Ariz.), Tiffany McCarty (Florida State; Laurel, Md.), Courtney Verloo (Stanford; Tualatin, Ore.)

Over at rhythm bandits, there is an interesting look at U-20 players that were not included on the roster.

Just for fun, here is my starting XI, given the final options: Henninger; Johnson, Pressley, Quon; Mewis, Mewis, Nairn, Noyola; DiMartino, Leroux, Verloo. The most skill and the most chemistry.
